In the heart of Greece, nestled in the breathtaking valley of Tempi, lies the Holy Shrine of Agia Paraskevi, a place of deep spiritual reverence and healing. Visiting this sacred site was an extraordinary experience—one that left an imprint on my soul, strengthening my connection to faith, resilience, and divine miracles.
The Story of Saint Paraskevi
Agia Paraskevi, meaning “Saint Friday,” was born to Greek Christian parents near Rome, after years of fervent prayers for a child. From a young age, she embraced a monastic life, dedicating herself to faith, knowledge, and the guidance of others. After her parents’ passing, she chose to renounce worldly possessions, journeying from town to town to spread the Christian faith.
Her unwavering devotion, however, brought persecution. During the reign of Emperor Antoninus Pius, she was arrested and accused of blasphemy. Despite enduring brutal torture—including being dipped into a cauldron of boiling oil and tar—she emerged unscathed. The emperor, struck by both her beauty and defiance, demanded she renounce her faith in exchange for a peaceful life. Yet, Paraskevi stood firm.
Astonished by her resilience, the emperor accused her of witchcraft, but his own arrogance led to a moment of divine intervention. When she threw the scalding oil onto his face, blinding him, he cried out for her mercy. In an act of compassion, she restored his sight. This miracle led to his conversion to Christianity.
Despite this triumph, future rulers continued to persecute her, ultimately leading to her martyrdom by beheading. Today, her relics are venerated in Thesprotia, Greece, where the Monastery of Saint Paraskevi of Pounta stands. She is known as the patron saint of healing, particularly for ailments of the eyes, and her presence is still deeply felt in churches and temples across Greece.
